Dube TradePort Corporation History
From an aviation-linked concept in 2003 to a high-growth logistics, manufacturing, and agricultural platform, Dube TradePort's development has been shaped by verified milestones from the 2026 corporate history source pack.
Concept to operational platform
The early period established the provincial mandate, integrated master planning, ACSA partnership, airport and cargo operations, AgriZone launch, and the first regional export milestones.
Provincial mandate
Established by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government to create an aviation-linked export platform for investment and job creation.
Integrated master plan
National support enabled an integrated Master Plan linking the future Special Economic Zone with King Shaka International Airport.
ACSA partnership
A formal public-public partnership with Airports Company South Africa unlocked construction and accelerated delivery.
Airport and cargo open
King Shaka International Airport and the Dube Cargo Terminal opened on schedule, activating logistics, tenants, and agricultural partnerships.
AgriZone launched
Dube AgriZone recorded early commercial harvests and was officially opened by the President of South Africa.
Regional exports take off
First agricultural export contracts and direct routes to Lusaka and Harare strengthened Dube TradePort's role in regional trade.
Growth, investment and global connectivity
IDZ and SEZ designation, Aerotropolis planning, cargo recovery, expansion initiatives, Net Zero direction, and the R4.2bn investment milestone strengthened Dube TradePort as a connected growth platform.
IDZ designation
Industrial Development Zone status reinforced the precinct's industrial development mandate and investment appeal.
SEZ redesignation
Special Economic Zone status strengthened the proposition further and helped attract landmark industrial investment.
Aerotropolis plan
The Durban Aerotropolis Master Plan launched as international recognition grew and passenger volumes peaked at 6.1 million.
Cargo recovery and AiRoad
After COVID disruption, cargo outperformed targets and Dube AiRoad expanded logistics services.
Expansion and Net Zero
Investment accelerated across AgriZone, TradeZone, and Dube City as air routes returned and sustainability targets sharpened.
R4.2bn milestone
Private investment reached R4.2 billion alongside stronger exports, passenger growth, and steady cargo throughput.
Strategic expansion
Future growth focuses on resilience infrastructure, renewable energy investment, Kings Estate (Wewe), TradeZone 3, the Illovo Automotive Supplier Park release, and export-scale AgriZone development.
